What is the best career advice you ever received?
When I first started practicing law, my mentor told me: “Don’t worry about finding new clients. Focus on learning the substance of your practice and becoming the best lawyer you can be, and if you do that, your clients will find you.” He also said, “Never show up to a closing without a calculator!” And he was right, on both. Ten years later, his advice still rings true and continues to focus my priorities in daily practice.
What motivates you to give back to your community?
My strongest motivator is the example it sets for my children. I want them to see, through experience, that we donate our personal time, energy and money to causes we believe in because that is our responsibility as members of a community. I want their everyday lives, as well as their broader world view, to be shaped in part by their understanding and acceptance of the idea that everyone has the power to make a positive impact, big or small, in their community.
Volunteer activities: Board of Trustees of Child and Family Services of N.H.; interviewer for the St. Paul’s School Advanced Studies Program; participating in my children’s school activities.
