ATKINSON — A 71-year-old father is facing charges after allegedly shooting his son in the abdomen during an argument Friday afternoon, police said.
Albert LaMonica was charged with felony first-degree assault, domestic violence and reckless conduct.

Police Chief Al Brackett said police were called to a home at 13 Newbury Drive around 3:10 p.m. after LaMonica reported the shooting.

Brackett said the victim was LaMonica’s 45-year-old son, who suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries when he was shot once in the abdomen.

The victim’s name was not immediately released. Brackett said he was transported to a hospital and is stable.

Brackett said the shooting occurred during an argument that “escalated into a domestic assault that escalated into the use of a firearm.”

Police believe the victim was shot with a handgun. Brackett said a handgun was seized from the residence along with several assault rifles and other guns.

LaMonica lives at the residence with the son and other family members, Brackett said. Investigators were still interviewing witnesses Friday evening, he said.

Brackett said Atkinson police have not had a history of issues with the family.

He said neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have been factors in the shooting.
