BRENTWOOD — A Rockingham County grand jury has indicted a 36-year-old Boston man on the charge of negligent homicide while under the influence of alcohol in the February death of his passenger on Interstate 95 in Portsmouth.

Police said Daniel A. Powers was driving his Honda Civic and tried to change lanes in front of a tractor-trailer last Feb. 7 when he lost control of the car and the passenger side was struck by the large truck.

A passenger in the Civic, 36-year-old Courtney Hickson of Chelsea, Mass., was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead that night, police said.

At the time of the crash, state troopers said speed and impairment appeared to be contributing factors to the accident.

All southbound lanes of I-95 near the area of Exit 7 were closed for 2½ hours following the crash, which occurred at about 6:40 p.m., police said.

According to court paperwork, the grand jury approved the indictment against Powers earlier this month.
