Cruz campaign, Bush blast Trump for taking 'snow day' instead of speaking to Londonderry Lions Club on Friday
MANCHESTER — Donald Trump’s presidential rivals are mocking him for taking a “snow day” and skipping out Friday on speaking to a local Lions Club.
Coming four days from the New Hampshire presidential primary, and when plenty of other candidates were making the rounds amid the snowfall, Ted Cruz’s campaign called it evidence that Trump lacks true commitment to the state.
Jeb Bush took to Twitter to needle Trump. “My 90-year-old mother made it out to campaign,” he said.
Trump was scheduled to address the Londonderry Lions Club at 12:30 p.m., with doors opening at 10:30 a.m. The Trump campaign issued its update, emailed at 10:15 a.m., that “due to the weather and the airports being closed,” Trump would be unable to attend.
The logistics pretzel here is that Trump had just spent one of his busiest days on the New Hampshire campaign trail, with four events, on Thursday. The billionaire businessman typically flies in for a big rally or event and then flies out of state.
He likes to sleep in his own bed at Trump Tower in New York.
His fly-in, fly-out, fly-over campaign style made news last month when he stayed overnight in Iowa, in a Holiday Inn Express.
Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, when asked why Trump does not stay in hotels in the Granite State, responded, “Mr. Trump is staying in NH for the next four days.”
The GOP frontrunner will participate in the ABC News debate tonight at St. Anselm College, hold an event in Holderness on Sunday, speak at a big rally at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester on Monday, and hold a primary night party at the Executive Court Banquet Facility in Manchester on Tuesday.
The town hall meeting before the Londonderry Lions Club will be rescheduled to Monday, with details to be announced.
The Trump announcement that he would postpone his Friday appearance in Londonderry claimed “airports being closed” was a factor. Trump’s private plane is kept at LaGuardia Airport, where CNN reported the fixed-base operator remained open as usual. Other flight advisories did indicate some significant delays Friday at LaGuardia.
The snowstorm had very little impact at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, which is a short drive to the Lions Club where Trump was to speak.
Only two flight cancellations at MHT occurred Friday, and they were not directly attributed to the storm, according to Deputy Airport Director Thomas J. Malafronte.
Several delays occurred as a result of low visibility during the peak snowfall, but most flights were on schedule.
