MEREDITH — A local man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated Friday night after he drove off the road into Lake Waukewan, police said.

Shane D. Cutting, 38, was driving westbound on Waukewan Street toward Route 104 when he missed a turn, hit the curb, jumped the sidewalk and crashed through a wooden fence.

The late model red Volvo XC 90 sport utility vehicle he was driving landed on its roof in two to three feet of water.

Neighbors called for help after hearing the squealing of tires, a crash and then a splash shortly after 9 p.m.

Meredith Officer Phil McLaughlin was at the fire station when the call came in and arrived within minutes of the report to find a good Samaritan already helping Cutting out of the partially submerged vehicle.

Despite Cutting’s report that no one else was in the vehicle, McLaughlin waded into the lake with flashlight in hand to search the vehicle, whose roof was pancaked.

He said the rear driver’s side window was down when he checked to make sure no one else was inside. All of the vehicle’s air bags had deployed, making it difficult to see inside the SUV, which was not registered to Cutting.

“It must have been extremely unnerving to end up being upside down and disoriented like that,” McLaughlin said.

The crash occurred in an area that has a posted speed limit of 25 mph between the public beach and the boat ramp.

The Meredith Fire Department ringed the wrecked car with a floating boom made of absorbent material to soak up leaking gas and oil. Waukewan serves as the town’s source of drinking water.

Firefighters used a chainsaw to clear lakeside brush and several small trees damaged in the crash to allow a crew from Harper’s Towing to recover the SUV from the lake and winch it onto a ramp truck.

Cutting was taken to Lakes Region General Hospital for treatment and subsequently arrested for DWI. He was released on personal recognizance bail and will be arraigned at a later date.
