Exeter High’s Jackie Gaughan continues to shine at the highest levels of competition.

Gaughan, a senior, became the national champion in the girls’ 5,000 meters Friday night at the New Balance Indoor Nationals at The Armory Track and Field Center in New York.

Gaughan’s time of 16 minutes, 19.42 seconds was almost 45 seconds faster than second-place finisher Monica Hebner of Allendale, N.J.

Gaughan, who has committed to attend Notre Dame, set a New England record in the two-mile last Saturday at the New England High School Indoor Track Meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

The December 2017 Union Leader Athlete of the Month after winning a second straight NHIAA Meet of Champions during the cross-country season, Gaughan was a double winner at the Division I state meet on Super Bowl Sunday at Dartmouth’s Leverone Field House. She ran a 9:35.7 to break a state record in the 3,000 meters and also captured the mile in 4:40.4.
