PELHAM — A lightning strike Friday caused significant damage to the steeple of the First Congregational Church at 3 Main St. in Pelham, according to police and fire officials.

The lightning strike occurred just before 5 p.m. and caused a small fire in the steeple, Pelham police officials said.

Traffic near the center of town was brought to a halt for nearly an hour at rush hour as police closed Main and Common streets to give first responders better access to the scene.

Many neighboring towns sent equipment to help the Pelham Fire Department’s efforts, including the fire departments of Salem, Atkinson and Methuen, Mass.

Traffic was reopened on Main Street just before 6 p.m., officials said.

There were no injuries reported from the incident.
