MANCHESTER — Bernadette Jao has been named director of Patient and Nursing Services at the Manchester VA Medical Center, as the center rebuilds its management team in the wake of accusations of substandard care.
Jao most recently served as a nurse leader and member of senior leadership at the Wilmington VA Medical Center in Delaware.
She holds doctorate, master’s and bachelor’s degrees in nursing and is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse.
“Dr. Jao’s philosophy, proven leadership and experience are an enhancement to the medical center, and will add tremendous value to the health care we provide New Hampshire veterans,” said Alfred Montoya, acting director of the Manchester facility.
Veterans Administration Secretary David Shulkin announced Montoya’s appointment in August and said he was launching a national search for a new director, chief of staff and nurse executive.
The chief nursing position was held by Carol Williams, one of two employees that whistleblower doctors at the Manchester VA singled out for criticism when they made their complaints public last July.
Eleven doctors and medical staff reported to federal agencies that veterans were receiving substandard care in sometimes unsanitary conditions.
