BERLIN — A Massachusetts woman was seriously injured when she lost control of her rented snowmobile and crashed into a tree Friday morning.

The state Fish and Game Department identified the injured woman as Rhonda Ward, 49, of Rowley, Mass.

In a news release, Fish and Game said Ward was riding north on Corridor 19 around 10 a.m. when her machine went off the trail and hit a tree.

First responders from Berlin and Gorham used rescue utility vehicles to reach the injured woman and transport her to a waiting ambulance. She was taken to Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin where she is being treated for what officials said were serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Fish and Game is warning riders to use caution and drive slowly, as trails in the North Country are “extremely icy and treacherous in some locations.”
