THOMPSON AND MESERVE’S PURCHASE — Fish and Game officers helped a New Jersey woman descend Mt. Adams on Friday after she injured her ankle hiking one of the most difficult sections in the White Mountains, according to state officials.

The first report came in at 10:30 a.m. via a 911 call that Marie Collins, 29, of Howell, N.J., had injured her ankle on the Madison Gulf Trail on Mt. Adams and couldn’t get down under her own power.

Later, conservation officers learned Collins had been hiking with her husband Allen Collins on Thursday when the injury occurred.

Her husband told Fish and Game officials they had been descending the trail Thursday night when she got hurt and the couple decided to set up a tent near the ledge on Madison Gulf Trail.

On Friday morning the injury worsened and that’s when the pair called for help.

Volunteers from the Appalachian Mountain Club and Fish and Game officers responded and found the couple at noon Friday.

After providing medical treatment to the ankle, Marie Collins was able to hike down. The rescuers stayed with the Collins until they reached the Great Gulf Trailhead at 4:45 p.m. Friday.

The pair admitted being novice hikers, and Fish and Game officials said it’s a lesson to make sure the hike matches the ability of all those who are undertaking it.
