Manchester School Supt. Dr. Bolgen Vargas wasted no time reaching into his own administrative pool to come up with the next principal of the Beech Street Elementary School.
Assistant Supt. of Elementary Education Dr. Chris Martin is Vargas’ choice to replace Christine Brennan, who was sworn in last week as the next deputy commissioner of the New Hampshire Department of Education.
A near 30-year veteran employee of Manchester schools, Martin taught music in the Beech Street school among others back in the 1990s.
“I’m looking forward to being back in the school environment, working closely with staff and students,” Martin said in a statement. “When I was at Beech Street 25 years ago, the motto was ‘Nothing but the best at the Beech,’ and I intend to carry on that tradition.”
Martin was named assistant superintendent two years ago this month by former superintendent Debra Livingston.
In 2003, Martin became Manchester’s director of fine arts, overseeing faculty and curriculum for art and music programs across the district. Before becoming assistant superintendent, she had been principal of Webster Elementary School for five years.
“Dr. Martin is an experienced leader committed to educating students in our city,” Vargas said in announcing the move. “She is the right person to take the helm at Beech Street School and keep it moving forward.”
School Department Communications Coordinator Andrea Alley did not know whether Martin would retain the same salary with her new assignment.
In 2016, Martin, as assistant superintendent, earned $103,854 a year.
As Beech Street principal, Brennan made $97,796 last year.
Martin begins her duties at Beech Street Elementary School next week.
Brennan had been in the Manchester School District for 31 years, beginning when she was hired in 1987 to teach first grade at Wilson Elementary School, which she did for 20 years.
She was named principal of Beech Street in March 2014.
