Petition urges Sununu to join Climate Alliance

A state legislator from Marlborough plans to present Gov. Chris Sununu with a petition Thursday encouraging him to have New Hampshire join the U.S. Climate Alliance.

State Rep. Marjorie Shepardson, D-Marlborough, launched the petition on June 7 in the days after President Donald Trump announced he was withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement. It has nearly 2,000 signatures, as of Monday. Sununu, R-Newfields, said earlier this month that he had no immediate plans to join the Climate Alliance. He cited unknowns and questions about the impact on the economy and environment.

The President, in his remarks June 1, was adamant that the Paris Agreement would hurt America at the "exclusive benefit of other countries."

"The United States will cease all implementation of the non-binding Paris Accord and the draconian financial and economic burdens the agreement imposes on our country," Trump said.

"This includes ending the implementation of the nationally determined contribution and, very importantly, the Green Climate Fund which is costing the United States a vast fortune."

Governors from a dozen states, including Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Vermont, have signed onto the U.S. Climate Alliance, which seeks to reduce emissions at least 26 percent from 2005 levels to meet targets set by the federal Clean Power Plan, which Trump also opposes.

Shepardson plans to present the petition to Sununu on Thursday, when the Legislature goes on lunch break. She said there is another online petition that has the same goal.

"I don't expect this will change his position," she said in an interview Monday.

The third-term legislator, who sits on the House Science, Technology and Energy Committee, said New Hampshire must strengthen its commitment to reducing carbon emissions via the alliance, and continue support of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.

Members of the all-Democrat congressional delegation have also encouraged Sununu to join the U.S. Climate Alliance.
