BELMONT — Authorities are still looking for a local man who could be suffering from a gunshot wound following an incident on Cycle Lane, according to police.
Lt. Rich Mann said his department was notified shortly before 6 a.m. on Friday, of an assault and when they responded discovered that a handgun had been discharged.
A detective determined after conducting interviews that a woman was the victim of a felony-level domestic violence assault that involved a deadly weapon, police said.
A neighbor told police that he heard a woman yelling and went to see if he could help. When the man arrived at the woman’s residence he learned she had been struck several times with a baton or club of some type.
Some type of encounter then took place between the neighbor, who had brought a gun, and the alleged male assailant, according to police.
During the encounter between the two men a single shot was fired from the handgun, police said.
After the gun discharged, the alleged assailant fled in a vehicle. Lt. Mann said it is unknown if the man had been struck by the bullet.
Police recovered the handgun and a spent casing but have been unable to contact the man who drove away.
Authorities have reached out to the man’s family and asked for their assistance in trying to locate him to determine whether he was injured.
Mann said police would also like to speak to him about the alleged domestic assault.
The woman was taken to a local hospital by ambulance and released after being evaluated.
“This is an active case and we are hoping to hear from the man who fled from the home sooner than later,” Lt. Mann said.
