August 31. 2018 11:18PM

MANCHESTER — While investigating a report of shots fired early Friday morning on the city’s West Side, police arrested an alleged prowler instead.

The shots were reported about 1:20 a.m. and officer Michael Pauley responded to the area of Amory and Reed streets to speak with the person who made the report.

“The witness provided a description of a man seen running from the area immediately following the gunshots,” police said. “However, the witness stated he did not see a weapon in the man’s hand and was unsure if the man seen running was related to the gunshot call for service.”

Responding officers located several 9mm and .40 caliber shell casings between 342-328 Amory St., but found no property damage, police said.

During the course of the investigation an officer spotted a man fitting the description of the one seen running near 286 Amory St.

“Jose Gomez, 45, of Manchester, was attempting to conceal himself behind a wooden fence and became confrontational with the officer when questioned about the incident,” police said.

Gomez was charged with prowling after it was determined he did not live at an address he attempted to enter as police spoke with him, as well as resisting arrest, according to police.

“Gomez was not charged with the gun-related incident as it remains under investigation and unknown if he had anything to do with the original call,” police said.

Gomez was scheduled to appear in 9th Circuit Court-Manchester Friday.
