NORTHFIELD — A former Tilton man was indicted Thursday by a Merrimack County grand jury accusing him of setting a brush fire on the Winnipesaukee River Trail May 14.

Alan Bushway, 18, formerly of Morrison Avenue, is charged with attempted arson, a Class B felony, according to a news release from the state Fire Marshal’s Office.

Tilton-Northfield firefighters put out the blaze, which damaged about a third of an acre and endangered a nearby dwelling, officials said.

Bushway was arrested July 26 on a warrant issued by the state Fire Marshal’s Office for six misdemeanor counts of arson related to other brush fires that had been set in the woods along the trail in Northfield between May 14 and July 19, the release said.

Bushway was being held in the Merrimack County jail on $12,000 cash bail. Bushway was ordered to refrain from drugs and alcohol and ordered not to possess any dangerous weapons. He also may have no contact with the victims/property owners where the fires were set and may not possess a lighter, matches, or anything else that could start a fire upon his release.

His arraignment will be scheduled in the near future, the release said.
