Trump nominates Bedford's Ashooh for Commerce post, Gingrich's wife as ambassador to Holy See

BEDFORD — University Systems of New Hampshire executive and former congressional candidate Rich Ashooh of Bedford is President Trump’s nominee to be assistant commerce secretary heading up export administration.

Last fall, Ashooh opposed the renomination of then-Republican Congressman Frank Guinta of Manchester and lost in that GOP primary. Democrat Carol Shea-Porter of Rochester recaptured the First Congressional District seat by unseating Guinta last November.

Since that campaign, Ashooh has been director of economic partnerships at USNH.

Before the congressional bid, Ashooh was executive director of the Warren Rudman Center at the University of New Hampshire School of Law.

Ashooh spent more than two decades in the aerospace industry, much of it as an executive with Lockheed Martin and then BAE Systems in Nashua.

He also worked in Washington as a committee aide in the U.S. Senate.

A University of New Hampshire graduate, Ashooh and his wife have five children.

On Friday, Trump also nominated the wife of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Callista Gingrich, to be US ambassador to the Holy See in the Vatican.
