DERRY — A 70-year-old woman accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake Thursday afternoon, slamming into the side of the local Post Office, according to police.

Neither the driver nor anyone else was injured, but the crash left about a 3-foot-wide hole in the brick veneer of the building at 24 Tsienneto Road, police said. The woman, whose name wasn’t available, was behind the wheel of an SUV in the incident that occurred at about 3:15 p.m., according to officials.

“There is minor structural damage to the building interior and exterior,” Capt. Vern Thomas said in an email.

As a precaution, fire officials evacuated the building for about 25 minutes before allowing the employees and postal customers to return, said Battalion Chief James Richardson.

“We evacuated the building a little bit just to make sure,” Richardson said, adding, “We got a second opinion from the building inspector and it’s not structural.”

Richardson said crews from the Post Office’s facilities management division were scheduled to repair the damage, which he estimated at a few thousand dollars.

The area around the damage was cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape. Several workers arrived to survey the damage before beginning to make repairs late Thursday.

Thomas said the investigation remains open.
