The Lincoln Levy Gallery in Portsmouth plans to unveil an exhibition titled “Abstracted Barns,” by Barbara Stevens Adams, on Wednesday, Sept. 5.

PORTSMOUTH — Artist Barbara Stevens Adams is taking on a New England icon in her latest exhibit, “Abstracted Barns.”

The show will open Wednesday, Sept. 5, at the Lincoln Levy Gallery, 136 State St.

“Actually there is no one real barn,” Adams said. “Some started from shapes taken from photos of New England barns, and some started just from my imagination. But all are changed and rendered as abstracts.”

A reception is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7.

Adams said a class at Sanctuary Arts in Eliot, Maine, last year inspired her to undertake the abstract series.

“I was totally smitten by the process,” she said.

Adams is a founding member and past president of the Pastel Society of New Hampshire and a juried member of the New Hampshire Art Association.

She also is a signature member of Pastel Painters of Maine and a member of the Seacoast Art Association.

The exhibit runs through Sept. 30.

Gallery hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.
