HAMPTON — Police are investigating allegations that a man injured a seagull’s leg by kicking the bird during a weekend incident at Hampton Beach.

Deputy Police Chief David Hobbs said police were made aware of the incident and are asking anyone who may have witnessed it to contact Tony Palmisano, the police department’s animal control officer.

“It’s an open investigation. We don’t have anything to add at this time,” he said Monday.

A mother who claims to have witnessed the incident posted on Facebook late Sunday afternoon that she brought her children to the beach and saw a man “slamming a seagull with his foot” because the bird was “bothering him.”

The woman reported that the bird’s leg appeared to have been broken and that at one point it almost drowned until another woman rescued it from the water.

The bird’s status wasn’t clear Monday.

The animal control officer can be reached by calling the police department at 929-4444.
