New Hampshire Marine Mammal Rescue, a program operated by the Seacoast Science Center in Rye, got a call Friday about an ailing seal found on the beach directly in front of the Ashworth by the Sea Hotel at Hampton Beach.

Hotel employees told rescuers that the seal, estimated to be 8 to 9 months old, had been on the beach since at least 8 p.m. the night before, according to a post on Marine Mammal Rescue’s Facebook page.

Rescuers took the young female back to the Seacoast Science Center, where she weighed in at about 34 pounds and was assessed by a team that concluded she needed treatment.

“Luckily, our friends at National Marine Life Center (in Buzzards Bay, Mass.) had a spot for her,” the post said. “Her prognosis is guarded, but we are hoping she proves that she is a fighter.”
