Winnisquam blanks Nute to win volleyball crown

Sparked by a loud Carissa Archibald block, sixth-seeded Winnisquam of Tilton rallied to win the first game and went on to capture the NHIAA Division III girls' volleyball championship, 3-0, over No. 5 Nute of Milton at Foley Gymnasium at Plymouth State University Friday.

Game scores were 25-22, 25-23 and 25-16.

Nute opened quickly and jumped to a 17-12 lead before the Bears rallied to secure the win. Archibald's block tied the game at 17-17 and the Rams were unable to recover.

Winnisquam took the early lead in the second game and posted an 18-11 advantage, but a pair of service aces by Kelsey Taatjes knotted the game at 22-22. The Bears then scored three of the next four points to go ahead, two games to none.

The third and deciding game was never close as Winnisquam led 8-3 and 14-6 en route to the championship.

Archibald led the Bears with four kills and 10 digs while Hannah Chapin added 10 kills. Elyssa Clairmont dished out 18 assists, and Bailey Long was a presence at the net, finishing with three blocks, five kills and two aces. Mo Raymond chipped in with four kills and seven digs.

Nute received spirited play from Heidi Cloutier, Alisha Flanagan and Abby Flanagan. Cloutier managed seven kills, while Alisha Flanagan totaled six kills and 12 digs. Abby Flanagan added nine kills and six blocks.
