MOULTONBOROUGH - The town's property tax rate increased slightly to $8.56 per $1,000 dollars of valuation, up 23 cents from the 2011 tax rate.
Town officials anticipate that tax bills will be mailed out by the end of this month. Payment will be due by Jan. 2, 2013. This new rate is an increase of 2.76 percent from the current rate of $8.33 per thousand with the town's overall values staying roughly the same as the previous year.
An announcement on the tax rate as set by the New Hampshire Department of Revenue Administration was also posted on the town's web site, www.moultonboroughnh.gov.
The town's tax collector's office reminds taxpayers that in order to deduct real estate taxes from their 2012 federal income tax, the payment needs to be postmarked no later than Dec. 31, 2012. Although Town Hall will be closed for business on that day, payments by check placed into the drop box at the entry door will also be eligible for the deduction.
Taxpayers also have the option of paying by credit or debit card or electronic check through a link on the town's website, but a service fee applies.
At its Nov. 15 meeting, the Select Board applied roughly $430,000 of the town's fund balance to lower the overall impact of the increase. The new rate, with a minor variance for rounding, breaks down as $2.20 per thousand for local schools, which is up 23 cents, $1.11 for the county tax, which is up 5 cents, $2.53 for the state education tax, down 1 cent, and $2.73 for the town tax, a decrease of 4 cents.
"It is never well received when the tax rate needs to go up but I am pleased that the Select Board was able to modestly reduce the portion of the bill for which it is responsible." Moultonborough Selectmen Chair Joel Mudgett.
According to a tax rate history chart on the tax collector's office page on the town's website, the town's total tax rate was $9.69 in 1997, and $2.66 of that was the town's portion.
As a reminder, town offices will be closed on Thursday and Friday.
