MANCHESTER - The medical lab at Catholic Medical Center has been named 2013 Laboratory of the Year by Medical Laboratory Observer Magazine. The winners are celebrated during National Medical Laboratory Professional week, April 21-27.
The CMC lab won by excelling in all the qualifying categories, including customer service, team work, efficiency and lab inspection scores.
"As you can imagine, it is very difficult for a laboratory to score well in all qualifying categories, which is why it is such an honor to receive this recognition among our peers and within our community," said Roberta Provencal, executive director for laboratory services and outpatient rehabilitation at CMC.
The award comes after a transformation of laboratory services at the hospital that began five years go, when the lab was outdated and inefficient for the demand of today's medical technology, according to Provencal.
The lab was moved to a much larger, renovated space and designed specifically for the work, she said.
"By including our team in the process, we were able to listen to their ideas and include them as much as possible," she said. "We looked at our lab from all vantage points: work flow, space, productivity, customer services and efficiency, without jeopardizing quality. We even went so far as to implement a 7-Eleven-style, walk-in refrigeration unit with glass access doors to our lab."
