January 13. 2014 8:12PM

SALEM — A ladder company from the Salem Fire Department was among the crews battling a five-alarm blaze at a mill building in Lawrence, Mass., on Monday night.

Salem Fire Capt. Stephane Cattin said the call for assistance came in around 4:40 p.m., when the ladder truck, three firefighters and an assistant chief headed to Lawrence.

Cattin said the Salem crew was still working with departments from throughout northern Massachusetts three hours later.

“They’re operating at a defensive position, trying to contain it,” Cattin said.

As of 7:30 p.m. Monday night, Lawrence Fire Department dispatchers said the fire at 9 South Canal St. was still burning and had not been declared contained.

There were no reported injuries.
