Northfield voters to decide on roadwork projects

NORTHFIELD — At the 234th Northfield Town Meeting, voters will be asked to authorize several road-repair projects and to buy a new police cruiser.

Voting takes place Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Pines Community Center on Dearborn Road. Town Meeting will be held in the center on Saturday, March 15 at 9 a.m.

Residents will be asked to approve a $3.1 million budget.

Among the money articles, Article 9 asks for $32,900 for a new police cruiser. The article is recommended by both the selectmen and the budget committee.

Several articles ask for items with funding to come from the town’s Highway Equipment Capital Reserve Fund. Article 2 would draw $75,000 from the fund to replace highway and sanitation department equipment as needed. Article 3 would draw $6,000 to replace a 1947 roadside sweeper, and Article 4 would take $96,000 from the fund to replace a 2001 Ford F450 one-ton dump truck with plow and wing.

Article 11, which is not recommended by the budget committee, asks residents to spend $54,796 to pay capital recovery costs imposed on the Northfield Sewer District by the state’s Winnipesaukee River Basin Project for the 2014 budget year.

Article 5 asks residents to establish a Sandogardy Pond Road State Aid Reconstruction Capital Reserve Fund to appropriate $100,000 to provide the local financial match needed for the reconstruction of the road.

Article 6 asks for $241,400 to be added to the town’s Road Reconstruction Fund to fund major road reconstruction projects as needed.Article 10 asks voters to spend $1,064,453 for municipally managing a Department of Transportation Grant to construct Phase IIa of the Winnipesaukee River Multi-Purpose Trail in Northfield and Tilton. The article, however, would have no impact on the tax rate, as it is completely offset by $851,562 from DOT and $212,891 in donations.
