Sharks bite Monarchs with second-period surge

WORCESTER, Mass. — The Manchester Monarchs scored the first goal Sunday but mustered no more offense in a 5-1 loss to the Worcester Sharks at DCU Center.

Daniil Tarasov scored two goals for Worcester, which stopped Manchester’s four-game win streak.

Manchester (40-17-2-6) still leads the Atlantic Division with 88 points, 24 points ahead of fourth-place Worcester (30-27-3-1), which has 64 points.

On just their second shot of the game, the Monarchs took a 1-0 lead with center Andrew Crescenzi’s first tally since joining Manchester from the Toronto Marlies on Jan. 22. Londonderry’s Ian O’Connor and Jeff Schultz picked up assists on the goal at 16:26. Manchester led 1-0 after the first period.

But Worcester scored four second-period goals to take control.

The Sharks tied the game at 1-1 with center Travis Oleksuk’s 13th tally of the season at 3:17 of the middle frame. Mike Pereira, a rookie who just joined the Sharks out of the University of Massachusetts, scored his first AHL goal 5:24 into the second period to put Worcester in front.

Tarasov scored his 16th goal of ths season, at 7:10 of the middle period, to make it 3-1, and center Brock Higgs scored his third goal of the season as the Sharks took a 4-1 lead at 12:12 of the second period.

Netminder Mathias Niederberger replaced Jean-Francois Berube between the pipes for Manchester following Higgs’ goal.

Tarasov finished the scoring with a power-play goal in the third period.

Berube (23-15-2) took his 15th loss of the season, stopping 11 of 15 shots in just over 32 minutes of play. Niederberger stopped five-of-six shots in relief duty. Harri Sateri (16-20-1) earned his 16th win of the season with 26 saves on 27 shots for Worcester.
