Derry library's proposed 2015 budget moves forward

DERRY — Derry Public Library's proposed 2015 fiscal year budget of $1,252,662 has been moved forward by the Town Council without any cuts.

The budget is coming in at 1.7 percent less than the fiscal year 2014 budget, said Jack Robillard, library trustee and treasurer, during a budget workshop last week. He appeared at the workshop with Susan Brown, who has been serving as assistant and acting library director.

In his presentation, Robillard said the library has a highly trained staff with many staff members having master's degrees. Libraries are becoming increasingly more technical and require staff members with various degrees of expertise.

In developing the budget, library officials wanted to be efficient but fairly compensate employees for their experience and ability, he said.

An attempt to reduce the bottom line by approximately $26,796 for salary raises was defeated in a 4-2 vote. Councilor Michael Fairbanks abstained.

Council Chairman Mark Osborne made the motion to reduce the budget.

In voting against the cut, Councilors David Fischer and Joshua Bourdon praised library administrators for efficiently running the library and following a policy of not granting overtime.

"I just think they are being efficient and effective, and I think we need to carefully consider that when we are talking about the bottom line," Fischer said.

Bourdon agreed, saying the budget is coming in less than last year and the staff isn't unionized and doesn't take benefits.

"With what they have to work with, they seem to be doing a pretty darn good job," Bourdon said.
