Man arrested after attempted theft in Warner

WARNER — A Franklin man was arrested Friday after a five-hour manhunt, state police said in a release.

Mark Charles, 31, allegedly was involved in an attempted theft at "a remote business establishment" in Warner on Friday morning that was interrupted by the business owner, the release said.

Charles and another person, who was not caught Friday, ran into nearby woods, prompting a multi-agency search led by state police that included police dogs and a helicopter.

A passing motorist saw Charles hiding behind a tree near a canoe launch, then later stopped Charles and asked Charles if he needed help. Charles was caught a short time later by a trooper near the town line in Salisbury, the release said.

Charles is scheduled to appear June 26 in Hillsborough District Court.
