Seeds have been planted for Windham community garden

WINDHAM — Locals with green thumbs can now reserve their plots in Windham’s brand-new community garden.

Community Development Director Laura Scott said the new garden, located by the former bingo hall at 122 North Lowell Road, would be up and running in time for the summer season. Twenty garden spots are currently under construction at the site, which will include 10 raised-bed spots and 10 in-ground spots.

The Board of Selectmen approved initial plans for the project, which is supported by the town’s Community Development department, last fall.

In November, UNH graduate student Jeffrey Malloy announced his intentions to bring the venture forward as part of his college thesis project.Malloy, who is pursuing a Master’s degree in public administration, said the idea for the garden arose from writing a research paper on localized food initiatives. In the process of planning the Windham garden, Malloy said he researched similar programs in the communities of Derry and Goffstown. The Windham garden’s site seems the ideal spot to grow vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers, he noted, because of its sunny, centralized location as well as its proximity to a water source.

Interested gardeners will be given an 8- by 4-foot plot on a first-come, first-served basis. Malloy said there’s room on the site to add an additional 10 garden plots should the program prove popular.

Scott said there’s no charge for residents to partake in the local garden, though with only 20 plots available right now, space is filling up fast.

The program’s official launch will be celebrated on Saturday, May 24, with a community kick-off event held at the garden from 8 to 10 a.m.Those interested in obtaining a garden plot can obtain an application at the town’s Community Development office, located at 3 North Lowell Road, or online at the town’s website, www.windham-nh.com.For more information contact Scott at 432-3806 or lscott@windhamnewhampshire.com
