Pats select QB Garoppolo in second round
The New England Patriots selected Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo with the 30th pick in the second round (62nd overall) during the NFL Draft on Friday. He was the fifth quarterback taken in the draft behind Blake Bortles (Jaguars), Johnny Manziel (Browns), Teddy Bridgewater (Vikings) and Derek Carr (Raiders).
Garoppolo, a four-year starter, threw for 5,050 yards in 2013, the second highest total in FCS history.
As a second-round pick, Garoppolo becomes the highest player ever drafted out of Eastern Illinois. The previous high was third-rounder Chris Watson, who was taken by the Denver Broncos in 1999.
Dallas quarterback Tony Romo also came out of Eastern Illinois, but he was undrafted.
