Pinkerton's Campo earns first win against Londonderry

DERRY — Victory was a little sweeter for the Pinkerton Academy of Derry baseball team Friday afternoon.

Not only did the Astros defeat arch-rival Londonderry 4-2, they gave Pinkerton coach Steve Campo his first win against his high school alma mater as well.

Campo, who played the outfield at Londonderry, entered the contest with an 0-4 record against the Lancers in his two seasons as Pinkerton’s coach.

“It’s a hump to get over,” Campo said. “The Londonderry program has been at the top of the league for four or five years, so to get one from them was a good win. We’re going in the right direction.”

Pinkerton center fielder Riley Cahill delivered the game’s biggest hit, a two-run single that put the Astros up 4-1 in the fourth. Cahill, Pinkerton’s leadoff hitter, had two hits and two RBIs in the game. He also scored Pinkerton’s first run on a wild pitch in the first inning.

Pinkerton also received an RBI single from Chace Spears in the fourth.

“Riley’s a good contact guy,” Campo said. “All he was trying to do was get the barrel on the ball and he got a good piece of it.”

Pinkerton starter Chris Gerossie held the Lancers to two runs (one earned) on four hits in six innings. John Polichetti pitched a scoreless seventh.

Londonderry left two runners on base in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Londonderry starter Tom Corey allowed six hits and struck out four in six innings. He didn’t walk anyone, but hit two batters.

“His performance definitely got wasted,” Londonderry coach Brent Demas said.

Both teams are 8-3 and tied for second place (behind Dover) in the Division I standings.

“Big rivalry every time we play them,” Cahill said. “Coach Campo was 0-4 (against Londonderry). He’s been trying to get this one. Glad we could bring it home for him. It was great to get the victory against (Corey) especially. You know he’s one of the best pitchers in the state.”

Zach Tavano and Rob Del Signore each had an RBI single for Londonderry, which scored a run in the first and one is the fifth. Londonderry beat Pinkerton 4-2 last month.

“It’s good to see when Londonderry plays Pinkerton it’s turning into battles again,” Campo said.
