Claremont area firefighters fight two-day brush fire

CLAREMONT — Firefighters responded to a brush fire deep in the woods Tuesday, and returned to the scene Wednesday to put out spot fires.

Claremont firefighters returned to the fire station just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, said Claremont Fire Capt. Chris Pixley.

“Yesterday evening we had knocked down the majority of the fire and there were just a few spots. … That were sort of the in the middle of the burn,” he said.

It was unclear if the fire was in Claremont or Cornish so both communities sent firefighters. Newport firefighters also responded.

The fire was deep in the woods and far from any homes so the decision was made to return the next day to take care of the hot spots, he said. “Sometimes it’s safer to fall back.”

The cause of the fire is unknown.
