AMHERST — The top two teams in NHIAA Division I girls’ lacrosse met Thursday night with the No. 1 tournament seed on the line.

The host Souhegan Sabers came out on top in a back-and-forth battle, edging Pinkerton Academy of Derry 14-13.

Souhegan is 16-2 and will be the top seed when the playoffs open Wednesday. Pinkerton is 15-3.

“Pinkerton is a great team. We may see them again and they’re going to come at us blazing,” Souhegan head coach Maren Petropulos said. “They’re one of the best teams we’ve seen all season long. It’s nice to end on top at the end of the regular season.”

Souhegan pulled ahead 11-7 with less than 20 minutes remaining, but the Astros roared back on three goals from Kennedy Daziel and another from Aleah MacKay to make it 11-11 with 12:41 remaining.

The teams swapped goals to make it 12-12 before Souhegan went up 14-12 on two goals from Jocelyn Donohue.

“We knew that Pinkerton was probably going to focus on Mickenzie Larivee and Maddie Learned so we had a plan B and a plan C,” Petropulos said. “We needed kids to step up and certainly Joceyln Donohue stepped up in a huge way.”

Maggie McCarthy scored for Pinkerton with 27 seconds remaining but Souhegan was able to hang on.

“It’s two good teams facing off with each other,” said Pinkerton head coach Rob Daziel. “They jumped up a little bit and we fought our way back. It was good. The girls played hard.”

Kennedy Daziel scored six goals for Pinkerton and McCarthy had two. Donohue scored six to lead Souhegan with Larivee adding five goals and three assists.
