Roger Brown's Diamond Notes: Londonderry's Del Signore dominant

You know you’re having a good spring when the low point of your baseball season is a 1-0 loss in which you pitched a complete game and struck out 14.

That’s the case with Londonderry High School’s Rob Del Signore, a pitcher/first baseman who has been nearly unhittable this year. Del Signore’s dominance on the mound is one of the reasons he was selected as the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year earlier this week.

“I never really gave (the award) much thought,” Del Signore said. “I just try to play my best baseball and win as a team. I was lucky enough to win the award.”

Del Signore, a senior, entered Thursday’s game against Merrimack with a .295 batting average and a team-high 19 RBIs. He was also 4-1 on the mound with a 0.31 ERA and two shutouts. He had 86 strikeouts, 13 walks and had allowed 22 hits in 45 innings for a Londonderry team that was 12-6 with two Division I games to play.

Del Signore recorded a season-high 17 strikeouts against both Nashua North and Bedford. He was named Londonderry’s MVP last season, when the Lancers earned the No. 1 seed for the Division I tournament, but lost to Exeter in the title game.

“He’s got an above-average fastball, good control and a devastating curveball,” Salem coach Dan Kelleher said. “He’s also a good position player who can hit the ball, and he’s an outstanding kid.”

In addition to baseball ability, the Gatorade Player the Year award is based on character and academics.

Del Signore has verbally committed to play for Southern New Hampshire University next season. He is expected to pitch in college.

“On a good day my fastball, changeup and curve are all working — those three pitches,” Del Signore said. “This is my best year pitching-wise.

‘I’d definitely say this is my biggest award, but winning a state championship has always been my number one goal.”
