A good investment for NH; grant brings solid return in exports produced

June 07. 2014 8:43PM

A $600,000 federal grant to encourage New Hampshire exports has produced about $3.7 million worth of export sales and contracts, according to the state trade office.

"That's a real good investment: from a $600,000 investment coming back with $3.7 million," said Tina Kasim, program manager for the International Trade Resource Center in Concord.

The state trade export promotion grant helped develop the New Hampshire Aerospace and Defense Export Consortium, to expand exports, and funded travel for aerospace and defense companies to attend a few international air shows, including last year's Paris Air Show.

"When a company goes to a trade show, especially in aerospace and defense, they make a contact," Kasim said. But it might take up to two years or more to get a deal, "so you cannot see the results right away," she said.

The trade office also helps businesses connect with agencies, such as the U.S. Small Business Administration, to receive assistance.

Businesses also can pay the U.S. Commercial Service, part of the U.S. Commerce Department, to research a foreign company that a New Hampshire company wants to establish business with. - Michael Cousineau
