Ocean State Job Lot coming to Nashua
NASHUA — New Hampshire is about to receive its 11th Ocean State Job Lot discount chain store, as the company is currently renovating space inside the Main Street Marketplace Plaza.
Ocean State Job Lot is in the process of updating the interior of the former Bradlees discount department store at 300 Main St., according to Roger Houston, planning director for the city.
Bradlees closed its doors in 2001, and the facility has since operated with different tenants, most recently a Work Out World health and fitness center, which currently occupies part of the space.
“This will be a great asset to that area,” Houston said. “This should serve as an anchor for the shopping plaza, and certainly will bring in more shoppers.”
After losing AJ Wright within the same plaza, Houston said this will likely revitalize the retail facility and become a positive boost for existing tenants.
Ocean State Job Lot previously received a building permit to begin interior renovations at the site. It was not necessary for the company to approach the Nashua City Planning Board since the building was already a permitted retail use, he said.
Ocean State Job Lot offers manufacturers’ overrun and overstocked items. Existing stores in New Hampshire are located in Concord, Derry, Hooksett, Newport, Northumberland, Ossipee, Peterborough, Portsmouth, Walpole and Woodsville.
“We are constantly on the hunt for special deals, which allow us to offer quality brand name merchandise at closeout prices,” states the company’s website.
Ocean State Job Lot has more than 100 stores operating throughout New England.
Crews are currently working within the new Nashua location to correct flooring problems at the facility, according to Houston.
“The floor was a little uneven. It was built on an old mill pond that was filled in, and there was settlement with the shopping plaza,” he said. “They are trying to stabilize the floor.”
Ocean State Job Lot is headquartered in Rhode Island, and opened its first store in 1977.
The city’s building department is now working with Ocean State Job Lot as it continues interior renovations at the new Nashua facility, scheduling necessary inspections and preparing the store for its grand opening.
Houston said he did not know the anticipated opening date for the store. A media spokesperson at Ocean State Job Lot was not immediately available for comment on Wednesday.
