Manchester Crimewatch: City man arrested for threats made with a machete

MANCHESTER — A city man was charged with felony criminal threatening after police viewed a video of an alleged incident involving a machete.

Abdul Shabaz, 64, of 165 West Hancock St., is accused of confronting a man and chasing him with a machete.

Officer Adam Beland had responded to the area at about 11 a.m. Saturday for a report of a man being chased by another man with a knife and met with Kenneth Gill, 49, in the parking lot of the Family Dollar store at 130 W. Hancock.

Police said Gill reported that when he had walked past Shabaz while walking home from the Family Dollar, Shabaz was cordial. But the second time Gill walked past Shabaz’s residence, Shabaz was no longer standing on the sidewalk, so Gill said he continued on his way.

But as he passed the residence, Gill said, Shabaz came outside with a machete and threatened him. Gill fled and called police.

A neighbor, who had recorded the incident on video, showed it to Beland and Shabaz was arrested.

Bouncer arrested

Police early Sunday arrested the bouncer at Crazy Camel, 245 Maple St., for allegedly firing a “warning shot” from his Glock .357 handgun.

Richard Dion, 28, of Salem, was charged with felony reckless conduct.

Police said Officer Kevin Jusza responded to a report of a large fight involving the owner of the Crazy Camel, Tarek Gomaa, 46.

Jusza said Dion told him that a group of people entered the bar earlier in the evening Saturday and continued to be disruptive. Dion said the behavior by the quartet caused Gomaa to close early, at 12:45 a.m. Sunday.

Dion told the officer that he was moving people from the inside of the bar when he observed a crowd gathering in the parking lot, including the group that had been unruly earlier. He said he ran outside and fired a “warning shot” to prevent an escalation of the situation and said the crowd then dispersed.

When police arrived, Dion was arrested and his gun taken into evidence.
