Mass. men cased Hampstead home prior to violent robbery seeking guns

ABRAHAM DEPAULA

PLAISTOW – A group of Massachusetts men accused of carrying out a violent home invasion at a Hampstead home took five trips to watch the house so they could size up the homeowner and form a plan to steal his firearms collection, according to a police affidavit.

Details about how the four-man crew became suspects in the case along with another home invasion in Manchester became public with the June 19 arrest of Abraham Depaula, 25, of Haverhill, Mass.

Depaula was charged with theft, burglary and firearms charges for the armed break-in at a Kent Farm Road home on July 18, 2011.

Max Menagerman, 24, and Angel Sanchez, 32, both of Haverhill, Mass., are accused of attacking the homeowner and raping a 54-year-old woman with a firearm. The homeowner and female friend were bound with electrical wire found inside the home and blindfolded by the suspects, according to police.

Menagerman and Sanchez are charged with burglary, criminal threatening and aggravated felonious sexual assault charges.

A month before the burglary, Hampstead police began investigating how guns were stolen from the home by another woman, Kelly Schulz, on June 17, 2011.

Schulz, 43, who is now serving a country jail sentence for the theft, planned the theft with a female friend. That friend passed information about the gun collection onto her boyfriend Avery Walker, 22, of Haverhill, Mass., the affidavit said.

Walker is now serving a state prison term for telling his alleged partners about the house and participating in the July break-in.

“Avery told them about a house in New Hampshire that had a bunch of guns,” Hampstead police Det. Robert Kelly said in a sworn affidavit. “They all decided to take a ride and check out the house.”

During one scouting trip, the men used Walker's girlfriend to knock on the victim's front door so they could see the homeowner, police said. The homeowner later told police that he was suspicious of the group because of the recent theft by Schulz, according to Kelly.

During another trip, three of the men knocked on the victim's front door and said they were there for a landscaping job, the affidavit said.

“The intention was not to steal the guns that time,” Kelly said in the affidavit. “The intention was to ‘scale it out.'”

When the men finally decided to burglarize the home on July 18, they came to the house armed, police said. Three of the men had handguns, and “Angel had a large ‘Rambo' style knife,” Kelly said in the affidavit.

A longtime confidential informant for the Massachusetts State Police identified the four suspects soon after a similar home invasion happened in Haverhill, Mass. in September 2011.

The informant told police that Depaula, Menagerman and Sanchez were responsible for break-ins in Hampstead, Haverhill, Mass. and one in Manchester that happened July 3, 2011.

Phone records from the suspects place them in Manchester and Hampstead on the date of the home invasions, according to Kelly. No one has yet been charged in the Manchester case.

Haverhill, Mass. police executed a search warrant on Depaula and Sanchez's home and found several firearms in the basement that matched the description of the guns stolen from Hampstead.

All three remaining suspects are being held on bail. Depaula is due back in 10th Circuit Court, Plaistow Division, July 11 for a probable cause hearing.
