Strength in faith: Gaining it from Jim Foley's family

The quiet moral strength of the family of executed Rochester journalist James Foley stood in sharp contrast to the pure evil of those who took his life in the Syrian desert last week. As President Obama noted of the barbarians, no just God would sanction such an act.

References to God are too often given mere lip service these days. But it was clear from watching and listening to Foley's family that their faith in God, as was their son's, is genuine and strong and helping them to get through this awful, unfathomable time.

Father Paul Gousse of Our Lady of Holy Rosary Church was with the family the night they learned of Jim Foley's fate. He said Mass with them, as he will do this afternoon at a special service at the church with the truly fitting name.

Jim Foley was educated at Catholic Marquette University. He told its alumni magazine that during his earlier captivity, in Libya, he prayed the Rosary on a regular basis.

Today, New Hampshire prays for the soul of James Foley and for strength for his family.

They may not realize it, but their own faith and composure have done much to strengthen the rest of us.
