My name is Bob Haefner and I am a State Representative from Hudson. Recently, I proudly endorsed Carly Fiorina for President of the United States, and today I want to tell you a bit more about why.
I trust Carly. I worked at Compaq Computer Corp. until it merged with Hewlett-Packard in 2001. During and after the merger, I was introduced to Carly’s leadership. What struck me most about Carly as a CEO was her incredible foresight. Because of Carly’s handling of the merger, Hewlett-Packard was able to weather a long storm within the tech industry. It was such a storm that the stock index has only just recently recovered.
Here is what happened: After the dot-com bubble burst, many of Hewlett-Packard’s competitors were forced out of business and many individuals lost their jobs. Hewlett-Packard faced an uncertain future — with tens of thousands of jobs (and livelihoods!) at stake. But thanks to Carly’s vision and courage to do the right thing, Hewlett-Packard not only survived — the corporation became the leader in almost every product category. Hewlett-Packard’s growth more than quadrupled and it became the 11th largest U.S. company. Under her leadership, innovation tripled to 15 patents a day. She was building a company for the long haul, and I believe that is why it still exists today.
The tech industry took note of Hewlett-Packard’s success under Carly. The merger between Compaq and Hewlett-Packard, which Carly oversaw, set a precedent for many more mergers. I believe the industry is better off for it. Carly was bold and courageous enough to put herself out there and lead the way.
Vision and prescience, anchored by conviction and well-reasoned analytics, is one of the main traits we need in the next leader of our country. More and more, Americans believe our best days are behind us. Many in Washington look back to a so-called “golden age” — whether that be the 1950s or the 1960s.
The old ways aren’t working any more. Every age and demographic can agree on that. We need new leadership — from outside Washington. We don’t need members of the professional political class using the same old platitudes. We need fresh ideas that will ensure the organic growth of our industries and our communities. We don’t need top down, one-size-fits-all solutions that fail to take into account complexities within the American political system. We need bottom up solutions, from a 21st-century perspective.
Carly has consistently brought that fresh message. She is wowing and inspiring audiences in New Hampshire — asking them to rethink the tired, old red-versus-blue mentalities. Whether the policy in discussion is feminism, immigration, foreign policy, the economy — Carly brings a common-sense, forward-thinking perspective that inspires followers.
But I know from my personal experience under her leadership, her rhetoric doesn’t just sound good. It actually works. After all, Carly has demonstrated she has the vision and knowledge to make the right call during hard times. She made the right call at HP. I know she will continue to make the right call. We need a President that will bring out the best in Americans and tap into our vast potential.
Carly knows and Carly can help ensure that America’s best days are still before us.
That is why I am proud to support Carly Fiorina for President.
