College Football: UNH's last scrimmage set for today at noon
Special to the Union Leader
One final tune-up is on tap for the University of New Hampshire football team: the Blue-White scrimmage at Wildcat Stadium (noon).
Players are battling for starting or back-up jobs before the Wildcats open the regular season by hosting rival Maine on Thursday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m.
While Trevor Knight of Amherst is the starting quarterback, sophomore Ivan Niyomugabo of Merrimack Valley High, redshirt freshman Christian Lupoli and Will Pollard of Kennett High are all competing for the backup spot.
The competition is heating up at tight end with sophomores John DiCaro, Justin Malone-Woods and Brendan Hill, junior Nick Derocher (Northwood) and redshirt freshman Jack Cavallaro (Hanover) all in the hunt for a starting job.
On defense, trying to earn backup jobs behind linebackers Jared Kuehl (Plymouth) and Quinlen Dean are Cameron Brusko and Steven Harper along with sophomore Michael Balsamo. An Atkinson resident, Balsamo started at safety as a redshirt freshman last year and has been moved to linebacker after adding 10 pounds to bulk up his 6-foot, 216-pound frame.
