Andrew Benintendi’s two-out, two-run single broke an 8-8 tie in the 11th inning and the Boston Red Sox beat the host Baltimore Orioles 10-8 on Monday night.

Benintendi’s ground ball into right field followed walks to Sandy Leon, Xander Bogaerts and Tzu Wei Lin issued by losing pitcher Miguel Castro.

The win enabled Boston to remain three games ahead of the second-place New York Yankees in the American League East. The Yankees beat the Twins 2-1 earlier in the night.

Mookie Betts had two hits and four RBIs, including a three-run double to cap a six-run fifth that put the Red Sox ahead 7-6.

Bogaerts’ solo homer in the seventh inning tied the game at 8-8 and sent the game to extra innings.

Red Sox starter Doug Fister lasted only two innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on four hits and five walks. Matt Barnes (7-3), who pitched a scoreless 10th, earned the win.

Carson Smith, the 10th Boston pitcher of the night, earned his first save of the season by retiring the side — Manny Machado, Jonathan Schoop and Adam Jones — in the 11th on three ground balls.

The Red Sox improved to 14-3 in extra innings.

The teams are scheduled to play again tonight at 7 p.m.
