Rookie quarterback Danny Etling ran for an 86-yard score and added a touchdown pass in the New England Patriots’ 17-12 win over the New York Giants in the NFL preseason finale for both teams Thursday night in East Rutherford, N.J.
Few starters played for either team as final roster spots are set to be decided. Teams must get down to the 53-player limit by Saturday.
Etling was 18-for-32 for 157 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. He connected with Ralph Webb from a yard out for a third-quarter touchdown that gave New England the lead.
Etling was also New England’s leading rusher, as his long fourth-quarter run gave him 113 yards on seven carries.
Amba Etta-Tawo scored on a 41-yard run for New York. Rookie QB Kyle Lauletta was 8-for-19 for 118 yards, a TD and an interception. He was relieved by third-year man Alex Tanney, who led the Giants to a last-minute score, an 8-yard pass to Alonzo Russell. Tanney was 13-for-23 for 92 yards.
The Patriots begin the regular season Sunday, Sept. 9 at home against Houston.
