College Football: Plymouth State rolls to victory

September 01. 2018 11:32PM

Plymouth State University couldn't have drawn up a better start to the season if it tried. The Panthers scored in every quartet and got contributions on both sides of the ball on the way to a 38-0 rout of Castleton in non-conference action at Dave Wolk Stadium in Castleton, Vt.

The lopsided outcome came as the Panthers gained 381 yards of total offense and picked up 21 first downs while allowing just 161 yards and nine first downs to Castleton. PSU quarterback Zack Edwards threw for a pair of touchdowns to go with 207 yards through the air while running back David Hamilton went for 147 total yards with a touchdown catch and another score on the ground.

Edwards kicked off the scoring with a 10-yard strike to Matt Ordway before Hamilton scored the next two for the Panthers. Hamilton ran one in from 15 yards before a running in 38-yard pass from Edwards four minutes later to make it 21-0 PSU at halftime.

The Panthers marched 88, 90 and 70 yards on those first three scoring drives.

The second-half scoring had little to do with PSU's offensive unit two interception returns for touchdowns capped the Panthers' day.

Matt Shea, of Windham, returned an interception four yards early in the fourth quarter before Brady Lafrance's 39-yard pick-six in the final minute of the game. Wolfeboro's Jeff Madden added a 25-yard field goal to go along with converting extra points on each of PSU's scores.

The Panthers begin Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Sept. 15 as they host Western Connecticut at Charles L. Currier Memorial Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
