SALEM — The owners of Klemm’s Family Stores have withdrawn plans to build a new gas station, convenience store and car wash at 55 Main St., near Tuscan Kitchen.

Town planner Ross Moldoff said he received a brief email from the project’s engineer, Mark Gross of MHF Design Consultants, on Aug. 21 notifying him that they had abandoned plans to build in what is currently an overflow parking lot behind Enterprise Bank on Main Street.

Co-owner Thomas Klemm Jr. said the location was an unpopular choice.

“There was a lot of pushback from the citizens of the town and the planning board wasn’t too crazy about it either,” Klemm said.

Moldoff said the proposed project would have built a gas station despite being located in the Depot Village Overlay District, which specifically prohibited gas stations and businesses associated with gas stations.

“I think it was a high hurdle,” Moldoff said.

But Klemm said he’s not discouraged. There is a second location he’s had his eyes on and he’s currently finalizing paperwork to propose what he expects will be a nearly identical project in another part of town.

He expects an announcement to be made in the next couple of weeks.

Klemm previously said the project would include a doughnut shop and sandwich shop inside the convenience store, and 10 fueling pumps.

The plan was to make it an Exxon station. His other gas stations are Mobil brands, but the Main Street location was too close to existing Mobil stations, Klemm said.

The project would be his first with a car wash.
