The University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team won’t have to look far for motivation this season.
The Wildcats were voted sixth Monday in the 2015-16 Hockey East Preseason Coaches’ Poll during the league’s annual media day at the TD Garden.
Boston College took the top spot in the poll, receiving seven first-place votes and a total of 115 points.
Last year’s national finalist Boston University was second in the poll with three first-place votes for 107 points followed by defending national champion Providence College with two first-place votes and 95 points.
The University of Massachusetts-Lowell was fourth place with 92 points, followed by Northeastern (76), UNH (74), Notre Dame (72), Vermont (57), Connecticut (34), Maine (29), Merrimack College (27) and the UMass-Amherst with 14.
UNH will host St. Francis Xavier on Sunday, Oct. 4 for its exhibition opener at 4 p.m. UNH starts its regular season on Saturday, Oct. 10, against American International College at 7 p.m. in Durham.
UNH women sixth, too
The UNH women’s ice hockey team was selected sixth Monday in the 2015-16 Women’s Hockey East Coaches’ Preseason Poll.
Boston College, the defending regular-season champion, received eight of the nine first-place votes for 64 points. Boston University, which won last year’s league tournament, received the other first-place vote and 57 points to edge Northeastern (50 points) for second place in the poll.
Maine received 34 points for fourth place, followed by Connecticut (32), UNH (30) Vermont (29), Providence (20) and newcomer Merrimack College with nine points.
New Hampshire plays an exhibition game Saturday at 1 p.m. in Durham against the Oakville Jr. Hornets from Ontario, Canada. The Wildcats host Maine in the regular-season opener on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
