Members of a New Hampshire National Guard unit returning from a year of active duty in Iraq were looking for a way to stay connected as they adjusted to life after combat. They chose hurling, the Irish sport most had only seen briefly during refueling stops in Ireland on the way to and from Iraq. They formed the Barley House Wolves, a club that has improved remarkably since its founding in 2006 by a group of absolute beginners.
A gift in gratitude to Irish Electric for its sponsorship of the 2011 championship season was presented before the Barley House Wolves Hurling Club's top two teams faced off for the Inaugural Kevin Castelot Memorial Cup Aug. 9 in Bow. Castelot was a member of the Barley House Wolves Hurling Club and New Hampshire Army Nationial Guard’s 237th Military Police Company. He was promoted to the rank of private first class earlier this year and was preparing to deploy to Afghanistan with members of his unit and hurling club when he died Feb. 7 after a sudden illness.
