Historical nonsense: Health care hyperbole

Reader comments

Supporters of Congress' proposed government takeover of health care, including Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, have taken to claiming that they are on "the right side of history."

The implication is clear: They are enlightened and the rest of us are small-minded simpletons too provincial and backward to see the great, progressive tide of history sweeping over us. To which we say, "Poppycock!"

Supporters focus on the past because they don't want Americans looking to the future -- when our descendants will have to pay for this monstrosity.

Just because this is another massive entitlement program dreamed up by a Democratic President doesn't mean America is wrong to oppose it. The country can't even pay for all the entitlement programs previous "progressive" politicians have saddled us with. We also won't be able to pay for this one, which just happens to be unconstitutional to boot.

The "right side of history?" Please. This program puts America on the wrong side of the financial ledger. But don't point that out unless you want to be called a heartless old fossil.

So now we can add healthcare the other Republicanic errors like - smoking is not bad for you, second hand smoke isn't bad either, mercury in the environment isn't bad, global warming, acid rain, hole in the ozone layer, kindergarten doesn't help kids, flouride bad for teeth, WMD in Iraq, lead paint in toys, mad cow, cutting taxes fixes everything. Don't you people ever get tired of being wrong?
- Robert, Deerfield

Sue has gotten delusional. Slow down, take a breath and turn of Glenn Beck for 15 minutes so you can clear your head. Wasn't this "editorial" about health care ?
- Herb C., Concord

Aside from being appalled at the sexual slurs used here by hateful liberals who only abide by a double standard, I can't imagine how they can turn the other cheek to socialism, no COMMUNISM. Fact is, to control a population you must control the amount they spend on health care, and who gets what, and this is the thing to do it. Also, to be able to tax everyone to redistribute the $$ to the UN for their global governance, cap and trade is being pushed as a cure for a manufactured global crisis that elitists dreamed up because it would 'fit the bill' to unite people against a common enemy.. (Haass and Rockefeller both said it) Even our poorest have electricity so no one will escape.

Problem is, climate change has just been dealt a death blow and exposed as the hoax most thinking folks already knew it was. IPCC and Gore need to be arrested! Inhofe will investigate.

If health care and cap and trade pass, God forbid, we will be just like EU. I fear there will be no turning back.

Meanwhile, scandals and corruption have reached an all time high under the worst president in the history of the country and he just keeps lying to us over and over.
- Sue, Manchester

Obamacare is a full-fledged assault on liberty, property & privacy. Healthcare is a commodity. It is blatantly unconstitutional to force Americans to buy any commodity, and even worse to require them to supply commodities to others. Shall we have "Give me liberty or give me death" or gimmee, gimmee, gimmee... Repeal the 111th Congress and all their works!
- Mae, Plaistow

To all readers,
I don't know about you but I am sick and tired of my Senators and Representatives not listening to me, calling me a teabagger and unamerican and other familiar names. I have a solution.
Let all of us who do not want this massive takeover by the Government stop working for one week. Lets hit these people where it hurts the most. Their "piggy banks", namely our tax dollars. Let us not send any tax dollars to Washington. It is the entitlement lovers, the people who thrive on Welfare and such who want this to happen. Ledt them pay the damn bills. Lets shut this damn country down. They'll listen then by GOD. Everyone just stay home from work. It is probably the only way we can get these way left wing nuts to listen to us. Let them get their taxes from thos 16,000 jobs the liars created. Write back your thoughts. We can do this!
- John D., Danbury

To NSR in Epping and to Lily in Goffstown,
Are you in for a rude awakening if this bill passes. I cannot wait to see what you write then. You are not going to like what you get. This is the biggest ponzi scheme of them all. I only hope you have the guts to admit when you are wrong.
- John D., Danbury

I have never been so concerned in my life for our country as I am this day. After doing a little research I have found that some states allow you to throw your Senators out based on a petition and some other factors. We need to act today and do all we can to remove these people. They do not listen, they do not care. I for one have no problem with reforming health care, and for making if affordable to people who cannot afford it. I do not believe it is a right, but I am not cold and would help others in all I could. The real problem is that this bill does not do this. Our Senators (exception Gregg) are knowingly ignoring us and even worse calling us negative and making us look as if we have been sent by insurers. I feel helpless and have had a sick feeling in my stomach since i realized there is nothing we can do to stop them. They know well enough once something is passed it will never go away. When are people going to realize this will create chaos? Why won't some people actually use common sense? If anyone knows of a way to start these recall procedures please point me to the right place, if it can be done at all in NH. It is like impeachment, but called recall. I have been trying to find the guidelines and I do think it is our best chance to stop this. Maybe other states can follow in this. We can at least try. And people for this bill thinking it will give them free health care need to really read this bill. It hurts our seniors, and the only reason it is not widiely told by the insurers is because they have been threatened and gagged. All people need to do is read this bill and they will see the truth, you don't have to listen to me or anyone else, read it, please!!
- Stacey, Manchester

Gary, you are right - this is going to be a doozy. I can not wait until these whiny liberal talking pieces see their next tax bill! My company already self-insures and pays an administrator to handle it (and it is a Fortune 50 company)! Goodbye Blue Cross Blue Shield and all of the rest. Everyone will be on an unfunded medicare starting in 2013. And that is another issue - no health care benefits until 2013 - after the next presidential election yet all the taxes to pay for it start 1/1/10. Wait til the libs get their tax bill! I'm willing to lose my health insurance and pay the higher taxes to see the ultimate idiots like Lily and NSR react to their new tax bills and medicare-like insurance plans!!! HA HA HA. Oh you guys aren't on Medicare???? I am and it SUCKS! But I'm glad to have you sit in lines with me Suckers!
- John, Bedford

The Senate and House bills are simply bad bills. Huge tax increases, massive government intrusion and bureaucracy, inescapable rationing, higher costs, less patient choice -- all under the guise of guaranteeing universal covearge, but in fact neither bill comes anywhere close to universal coverage. Scale these plans back to a core set of common-sense reforms that empower patients, not bureaucrats, and we'll have reform beore we know it. But Pelosi, Reid and Obama insist on massive government overreach. They will pay the price politically.
- Rick, Portsmouth

Ed/Manchester
You are absolutely correct, 10 Months. So we have an emperor apologizing for America even to our enemies, a first and yes he did that in 10 months. We have driven the national debt to over 25 TRILLION by 2018 in only 10 months, he has for 8 months had a strategy for Afghanistan and hasn't acted. He has appointed more czars the Russia in only 10 months, he has declare he wants redistribution of wealth from the US to the world, yes in only 10 months. Finally, when you open your eyes, you see and read that he and his family WILL NOT choose the government option, when your representatives declared that they too have an out with the Ted Kennedy Plan and why should they join the government plan? They and their families don't pay a dime. So Ed when your kids and grandkids are burdened with ermonous debt please remember your words 10 months. God helps for what is in store. Oh BTW Ed he will be out of office way before this hit the fan.
- Ray, Raymond

Who will take this $500 bet? When this healthcare package passes, it will lead to companies en masse flinging all their employees onto the government plan...probably within a day! What you folks don't know is that companies NEVER wanted to pay your healthcare!!! If they have an option, they'll take in in a second. Mark my words. Oh, and then you'll have to pay EVERY cent of healthcare costs. Happy with that? One more thing, take foreign language classes...there won't be enough english-speaking docs to handle 300-million people. Ohhhh, this is going to be cute.
- Gary, Manchester

Hyberbole in your title and your first sentence starts with: "Supporters of Congress' proposed government takeover of health care..."

Typical UL bull.
- Bryan, Wilton

It's 10 months into the presidency, Bob, give it a rest; there's a long way to go.

Look at the bright side, somehow we survived 8 years of Bush. After that, we should be able to make it through anything.
- Ed, Manchester

Talk about epic FAIL. In all those "failed" socialist health care systems the people live longer, infant mortality is lower, satisfaction is higher. Give me some of that failure please. Let the rest of us have it. You can live out your short ugly life with disease, diabetes, lung cancer and other preventable diseases. One thing all Democrates agree upon is that we don't want to force being healthy on any Republicanic adults. The children - well there is another question. We don't think that being pro life ends at birth.
- Robert, Deerfield

That's the same claim Lenin and Mao made, too.
- Mike R., Bedford

With any luck Carol Shea-Porter will be history after her next election run.
- Dave B, Londonderry

The proposed health care leigslation is a disgrace. Instead of fixing what is breaking with the exiting system (Senator Judd Gregg has a good proposal) the Obamaites are creating a new program with more issues than the existing programs have. The trailer items in this legislation are ridiculous and would be considered fraudulent tactics in the private forum--by these same legislators. To be taxed on the new system before delivery of any serivce is insane--especially considering our national debt will be doubliting to 24 trillion dollars by 2018 which does not include nor consider the cost of this legilation! BY OMB own figures, our national debt will be 18,648 trillion dollars in 2014 (no counting the cost of the health care proram. 2014 is the year this health care program is to start. The increase of national debt of every country that has national health care is 500% above their GNP. So U.S.A national health care does not make good sense--it is irresponsible and criminal to consider let alone pass this legislation. Our nation has become a borrower and not a lender for generations with or without this natinal health care. I have heard that Obama's czars are working rapidly toward a global re-distribution of weatlh lowering the USA economy down in line with others--for a more equitable golbal economy order. Our NH represenatives, Hodes and Shea, are helping this process. If in my work, I made errors like those being made on the benefits of the Stimulus dollars including employment and making non-existent districts and now the lies about the health care plan, i.e. tax increases, tax burdens, I would be charged with fraud and fired! It seems the Obamaites are drunk by the power they have from the last election that they have become deaf and blind to what the people they represent, USA citizens really want. They are acting contrary to the USA Constitution and don't care. Hisotry has already been written re the results that will come about from such attitudes and behavior when a democracy turns so. This is sad to see this evil in the USA.
- Jan, Londonderry, NH

Once again, a cowardly, partisan screed from the un-American editorial writers of the Union Leader.

What we will spend on health care for Americans is the same as we spent on the Iraq War - about a trillion dollars.

We already have government-run health care - Medicare and Medicaid.

The Union Leader editorial staff truly hates the average American, or they would have no problems with a public option that all Americans could count on for decent health care.

This is not "socialism." Unfortunately, citizens like Bob believe more in partisan politics than the benefits to America.

I'm not sure how you get up in the morning and hate your own country as much as the Union Leader editorial writers do.

It must be a sad and tormented life.
- NSR, Epping, NH

"Historical nonsense: Health care hyperbole"'s first sentence is "...Congress' proposed government takeover of health care...."

I guess the hyperbole the editor is writing of is his own.
- Peter Sorrentino, Manchester

Is the book Animal Farm still read in schools today? Better yet maybe as adults we all need to read it again.
- Deb, Derry

The important part of history to recall is that every beneficial stride that has occurred in American regarding the rights of citizens has always been met with massive criticism and resistance.
I always find it interesting that we are not able to fund so called entitlements, but we always seem to have the funds and the political will to maintain a state of perpetual warfare and a massive footprint all over the globe.
Even more recently, we seem to have the funds to bail out massive financial firms and corporations who have no reservations about showing us they believe themselves to be worthy of bonuses in less than a year since the supposed impending collapse of the economy.
Yet if you happen to be a working class slob who develops leukemia or some other horrific affliction, the message is: "You're on your own, best of luck ! "
Now, tell me UL ghost editor, what side of history am I supposed to be on?
- Herb C, Concord

Idiots like Shea-Porter don't care about anything but the party line. We all need to get out and vote these bums out next time. Its our ouw fault when we don't vote. We voted in radical socialist and need to wake up .
- Ted, Manchester

Since most of you don't pay out of pocket for all (or any) of the health insurance you have, many seem to be under the impression that doing nothing about the health care situation in this country is an option. Just oppose any and all change on the grounds that it isn't perfect. When the premiums double again in 5 or 6 years, so what, somebody else will pay it for you. This is an ignorant position.
- Kevin, Rindge

Paul Hodes, Carol Shea-Porter, and Jeanne Shaheen are on the verge of selling out the people of NH to advance a political agenda that caters to all things in opposition to Live Free of Die State, traditional American culture, beliefs, and practices.

Let’s be clear: The Democrats' takeover of healthcare has nothing to do with improving the healthcare that the vast majority of NH residents already receive, after all, America already has the best healthcare in the world; the democrats' purpose is to provide healthcare to those citizens that do not have insurance, period. In recent days, we are already witnesses to the beginning of the rationing with the significant and highly controversial reduction of women's healthcare.

The Democrats' are on the right side of THEIR history; American socialism--and no reasonable minded person that is well informed can convincingly deny it. We, the people, who are on the right side of American patriotism and the general welfare of our fellow citizens, must recognize that whatever characterization that we assess to the Democrats’ takeover of our healthcare will fall on deaf ears because the democrats believe in what they are doing and they have a controlling majority. We can come up with titles, descriptions, and facts all day long; it does not make a difference.

What we need to do right now is to contact our State reps and senators and ensure that they are at this very moment, crafting legislation that will protect our state’s rights and still ensure that the people of NH have a choice and not a mandate when it comes to healthcare.

We need to ask Governor Lynch to protect the people of NH from the intrusive regulation of the federal government.
- Len Mannino, Milford, NH

Carol Shea-Porter obviously believes in the Rahm Emmanuel school of thought - Never let a good crisis go to waste.

In other words, their agenda of higher taxes and more wealth redistribution can only be achieved during a crisis - regardless of whether they caused it or not. These Shea-Porter types will gladly send us to Banana Republic status if we keep empowering them.
- Jerry, Derry

"The best way to destroy the capitalist system is to debauch the currency".

"The way to crush the bourgeoisie is to grind them between the millstones of taxation and inflation".

"The goal of socialism is communism".

--Vladimir Lenin

Sounds like the Leftist Democrats are trying to repeat failed history. Their so-called "health care reform" has little to do with health or care. It has everything to with another economic take-over and unconstitutional Statist control, a back door scheme down the road of Socialism. When Obama and Democrats ram this unconstitutional legislation down the gullets of the largely opposing American populous, the focus will finally shift to where it should've been from the beginning. Who or what did America really elect into power last November? This ultra radical Left Democrat Party certainly isn't the "Party of Thomas Jefferson". With the majority of its political leaders, politicians, members espousing Neo-Marxist ideology and Orwellian bureaucracy, the Democratic Party seem more like the Party of Karl Marx - a radical, dangerous, foreign entity. Dig past the intricate web of the well-scripted public relation campaign, feel good rhetoric, lies, and look at the details of the Democrats actual policies – the pieces of the Marxist puzzle begin to fit. Perhaps that also would explain why Leftist Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has kept the actual text (all 2,000 pages of it) of the Senate version of “Obama care” hidden from not only the American public but from the few remaining Centrist Democrat members in the Senate. So much for transparent government, but when a powerful group of well-connected and well-funded Leftists are conspiring in radical unconstitutional fundamental “change”, the devil is certainly in the details.

To quote Karl Marx, “The theory of Communism may be summed up in one sentence: Abolish all private property”. “There is a specter haunting Europe, the specter of Communism”.

Now replace the word “Europe”, with “America” thanks to the likes of Leftist radicals Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, and the rest of their ultra Left ilk.
- Mac Wade, Newmarket

CSP's history lesson must have been taught by BO and/or Nancy Pelosi, ha!

The most RECENT debacle by the feds? 2800 jobs were created for NH District 00, say what? It doesn't exist, but Grant Bosse announced he's running for the Phantom district, hoorah! They'll have conservative representation...well, if we can find the district. We're going to trust our health insurance; i.e., our very lives to the gov't who can't even keep accurate accounting records on jobs? NH was just one of hundreds of errors in recovery.org's data. God help us all!
- judy, bradford

I can't believe I am going to have to vote for her if she runs against Guinta. He's worse. Will another republican please step up! Mahoney?
- Ray, Manchester

The only prognosis with the Obama, Reid, Pelozi, Shea-Porter Health Care fiasco will be the eradication of our rights and financial Armageddon. Americans had better wake up and smell the coffee that the Democratic Party is brewing, it called 'Communist Cappuccino'.
- Dan, Kingston, NH

OH No we will be in history as the country who went from prosperity, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to a country who is socialist at civil war and oh one who has re-distributed our gains to those who don't do a damn thing in less time than it takes to blink an eye or should I say give a shout to his homies in Chicago, SEIU, ACORN, AARP etc!
- Mike, Manchester

Sadly, even if we, the people, can kill this monster, they'll be back and try again with something much worse. While politicians in general are not to be trusted, "progessives" ( you know great guys like Mao, Stalin, Pol-pot, heros all to certain members of this administration if we can believe thier own words for anything) are to be trusted only to do what they can to force thier view on us. I realize the hate mongers will be screaming about how much we "hate" someone or something, but that too is the difference between progressives and the rest of us. A progressive believes if you say something they disagree with you are lying, or if you say something less that complimentary about someone you hate that person or thing. Reasonable people know better. Our health care payment system is not so broken that we need to destroy or diminish the health care plans for the majority of Americans just to cover 12 -14 million who lack coverage and want it.
- Jeff, Goffstown

The history of socialism is failure. Additionally and unfortunately for all of us citizens this presidency is going down in history as a failure. All of the spin will not change that.
- Bob, Salem

The arrogance of these Senators astonishes me. You should see the replies I have gotten, not one single question i have asked was answered. They truly have no care what this will do to Americans. I can't afford higher premiums, the average cost for someone like me who earns less than 35,000 is 3,000 per year. And a 2 income household will see costs from 15,000-25,000! 500 billion in Medicare costs and the bribes thrown to AMA and AARP are sickening and should be illegal if they are not. To those who think isurance companies are bad now, just wait until we have only a handful dealing with all of America and there is no competition. The government did have Blue Cross on board until they lowered what we will be taxed and fined. If we are fined we are more likely to beocme a customer. The fines are ludicrous, 2.5% of your income, and if you refuse to pay that up to $250,000 plus 5 years in jail. How can this happen? What about real reform? What about letting these insurance companies compete? This bill adds to the costs, rationed health care, gives us one large policy to cover it all. If you are a man you have to pay for female proecedures and vice versa. It makes no sense, and I don't need to be a rocket scientist to see it. We need to hold our Senators accountable. I wish there were a way to throw them out of office right now! Can we do nothing but sit and watch them "make history"!! Truly it is all they see, the stars of being in a history book. Whether you are Democratic,Independent, or Republican please speak up and call and call. I know it probably will do no good but at least try to stop them. We can reform the health care system in much better ways than letting these morons take over. Think of all the deaths they will cause passing this. If you think there is a shortage of Doctors now, wait a few years and we will truly have a crisis. God help us, our Senators refuse to!!
- Stacey, Manchester

A public option is not a take-over. You Teabaggers seem to be unswayed by facts.
