Manchester man sets record for largest cupcake
By CHAD GRAFF
New Hampshire Union Leader
Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009
Manchester's Ryan Abood has a sweet new designation in the Guinness Book of World Records: baker of the world's largest cupcake.
Abood, owner of Gourmetgiftbaskets.com, presented his colossal confection yesterday at the Woodward Dream Cruise classic-cars event in Royal Oak, Mich.
Guinness representative Carl Saville was on hand to inspect the cupcake as it was unveiled and lowered by forklift onto a floor scale, where it was measured at 1,224 pounds, easily exceeding the 151-pound mark established a month earlier by a Minnesota company, Cakes.com.
Saville's criteria: that the cupcake be edible, cooked throughout and resemble a cupcake. After passing all three tests, Abood's triple vanilla creation -- 4 feet tall and 10 feet wide -- was served to the Dream Cruise crowd in exchange for small donations to the Susan G. Komen Passionately Pink for the Cure charity.

Abood estimated that the 2-million-calorie cupcake could serve 10,000 people.
After an attempt at baking a 7,000-pound cupcake failed on Friday -- the $10,000 worth of groceries turned to liquid -- Abood and his crew of 30 scaled back to using about 200 pounds of flour, 200 pounds of sugar, 200 pounds of butter and oil and 1,000 eggs and slid the new concoction into a specially designed 8-foot-by-8-foot oven.
After about 8 1/2 hours of cooking time, Abood had his record-setter.
"If we had another day, we almost certainly would have had a 7,000-pound cupcake," he said in a phone interview last night. "Still though, this is incredible. People are taking pictures in front of it, and it's all for a good cause."
But Abood doesn't want to stop with the 1,224-pound cupcake.
"Maybe we'll come back to the Dream Cruise and do it again. Hopefully the 7,000-pound one," he said, before reconsidering."
"Bike Week could be another cool place to do it, though," he said, referring to the annual motorcycle rally back home in New Hampshire.

The website in the article is spelled wrong.

Maybe Jack Alex and Tom are the same person? Some people like to put up negative comments on public forums just to get reactions.
Don't feed the trolls.

Come on everyone, take it easy on Tom! Don't we all want to hear about another story about a soldier losing his life to defend our obese country, a single mom of 3 losing her house to foreclosure because she lost her minimum wage job due to downsizing, or how many people are arrested each week for selling drugs in this small city in NH.
Tom- A man is out there trying to fundraise money for a disease that may take your Mother, Grandmother, Wife, Sister or Daughter and seriously you're gonna complain about supporting obesity?! Talk about a lack of intellegence in print, you're a the top of list. Your negativity just drove me to become a customer!

Karen,
I agree, I am also tired of reading about Tom and his negative responses. Hey Tom, since you have a stellar idea about the "world's biggest salad," why don't you make one? Speaking of negative comments, Jack Alex from Manchester should be responding with his usual negative comments soon about this.

Tom maybe you didn't read my comment before you wasted your time being a typical negative commenter. This was done by a local man, brings positive publicity to both his local business(gourmetgiftbaskets.com) and our city, and it was to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer charity!! Maybe the news should only report on negativity all day, would that make you happy? Here's a positive story with proceeds going to a great cause but apparently that's not news enough for you....

Great, that is just what we need .. a BIG FAT CUPCAKE. Half the kids in high school are obese, yet this is a good news story? How about the world's biggest salad?

Congrats Ryan and all the GourmetGiftBaskets.com staff!! Just a reminder before any of the typical UL comment section posters respond, this was to benefit the Susan G. Komen Passionately Pink for the Cure Charity! So congrats again to you for setting the record and supporting a great cause!!
