Two women die in NH crashes
By STAFF REPORT
Monday, Oct. 26, 2009
Two women died yesterday in motor vehicle accidents across the state.
An elderly woman died from of injuries suffered in a motor vehicle collision in Bartlett, while a woman riding an ATV during a charity event in Pawtuckaway State Park died after her vehicle went off a trail and over an embankment.
Authorities were withholding the names of both women until their families could be notified.
In Bartlett, an area woman was driving on Route 16A about 7:50 a.m. and apparently tried to turn left onto Route 16 southbound when she collided with a van heading north, Officer Edward Conley said.
She was taken to Memorial Hospital in Conway. She was alone in the car.
The van driver was unharmed. Police also would not release that person's name.
In Deerfield, a woman taking part in the inaugural Walmart / Children's Miracle Network ATV Ride went off the trail after swerving to avoid another vehicle around 2:30 p.m.
Sgt. Dave Eskeland of New Hampshire Fish & Game said the woman was riding along the Round Pond trail when she took a sharp curve and came upon another ATV that had stopped after colliding with a person riding a mountain bike. The woman swerved and ended up going down an embankment before crashing into trees. She died on the scene.
Eskeland said the woman, who was riding alone, was wearing a helmet.

I think its important for everyone to know that Dave (formerly known as "TR")is an individual who has been "banned" from every possible ATV forum for causing hate and discontent and being downright hostile toward many people. He probably has had more time riding ATV's and logged more miles than I will ever in my life. I also think that its pitifull that this hipocrite loser has used this opportunity when someone has lost there life to continue the pot stirring.
Regardless of anyone's opinion as to whether atv's should be banned or not..... I am so saddened for the loss of a fellow ATV'er. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends.

sir i am so sorry for your loss, i can not even imagine how much it hurt's to loose your wife.
steve i agree with you a 150 percent that these so called atv club's in new hampshire have no clue how to do event's in a safe manner.
these atv club's only care about them self's with a bunch of ignorant member's that have there head's up there butt.
- dave m, epping nh
If it was that sharp of a turn and that narrow how come the atv club that was holding this event have a flag man there to slow people down.
I guess this was a poorly planned event by a atv club that obvious did not have the help or the knowledge to hold a safe event.
If the atv club was a responsible club this tragic accident would not have happened and this girl would still be alive

My Wife loved life and motor sports. We would travel up and down the East Coast going to sports car and vintage car races. We would run my car at New England Dragway on street nights. We bought the best helmets meeting the latest safety standards not cheap ones you see many people wearing. We have raced go-karts at Checkered Flag in Haverhill and F1 in Boston (we were planning on going there next week for my birthday). Last Christmas we gave each other the Richard Petty Experience and drove NASCAR type cars around Daytona Speedway. Safety has always been a top priority for us. Since we were married 30 years ago we have never let anyone ride in our cars unless they wore their seat belts. I believe in my heart that she saw she had two choices. Possibly running into the people on the trail ahead of her and possibly hurting or killing them or take her chances swerving off the trail… and we know the results.
I want to thank everyone involved that tried to help my wife.
My Wife is a tree hugger and environmentalist yet she believes motor sports and the environment can coexist if done properly. Please do not turn this into a forum for or against anything. Please consider my and my family’s grief. I have lost a life partner of 30 plus years. Leave the pettiness and bickering out of this.

To all the experts out there: I responded to this incident and the only word to describe it is accident. It was a extreamly bad spot in the trail. What people need to know is the trail was full of heros on Sunday, from those who stopped to give aid to those who made multiple trips from the road to the scene to ferry us in before our ATVs arrived. The regular folks out on the trail that day who dropped everything to help this woman, and then us as we responded should be proud of your service.

She died doing something she really wanted to do.
I should be so lucky!!!

A charity event should be safe for all participants. After all, the goal is to help others, cure disease, save the environment, save animals, etc. Instead a life was lost. Why would an organization choose such a dangerous event? Would we make Russian Roulette a charity event?

I think ATV's are fine, ride safely.
I think the bigger issue is elderly drivers. We need to take them off the road for their own safety and everyone elses.
The simple fact of the matter is that when people age, they lose their reflexes and situational awarness, and things happen fast on the road. In my mind, it is just another form of "impaired driving"
I realize people like their independance, and I have nothing against the elderly (I hope to elderly myself one day) but there are alternatives, such as family, friends and public transportation, that would make things much safer for all involved. The same holds true for young drivers.
Driving is a privelage for those who are qualified to do it safely, not a right!

I agree with Dave - Those machines do not have a good center of gravity and are inherently dangerous. My cousin dies while operating an ATV on the family farm years ago. No, my children are not allowed to operated these machines either.

Dave M of Epping says that everyone should have "there" opinion and he has given little consideration to sharing his opinion with the reader's.
More importantly he has given NO consideration to the victim of this tragic accident while sharing his opinion. In addition to this Dave's selfish post, his opinion is useless drivel based upon no real facts or statistics. That makes his opinion uneducated and child like.
Condolences to both family's of these two women who lost their lives.
- Dan, Manchester
Let's stop all the negativity, it sounds like this woman was the hero. She could have hurt someone directly in her path. The article makes it sound like she had nowhere to go. I'm sure those giving her aid are devastated and don't need to hear all you doomsayers. Accidents happen! Let's give our prayers to her family, friends, and the Walmart team, who will miss her dearly. Life is so precious, let's leave all the negativity out.
- Linda Peterson, Nottingham
You know its hard to see all these messages and and I wonder how she would feel knowing that people are being petty enough to argue over this now. My husband and I were there with friends and everyone we saw riding was being responsible. Freak accidents happen all the time, not just on ATVs. Our prayers go out to the family.
- Carrie Hathaway, Northwood, NH
I own a couple of atv's and even allow my children to ride. It is a sport that requires responsibilty. We ALL take risks just by simply living everyday. Accidents happens. No one is forced to ride, if you don't like them, simply don't buy one. But, don't be ignorant, this was a tragic accident. Be a human and remember a life was lost. My thougths and prayers are with the family and friends.
- JM, alton nh
This is a tragic loss, no doubt about it. This event was for a good cause, and I met a lot of nice/responsible people partaking in it yesterday. Banning something because of an accident like this is just ignorant and we should take comfort knowing this is why pepole like Dave of Epping don't set policy.
- phil, raymond
lowell atv rider
you have the wrong person i can't stand atv's!!
they hurt people and ruin lives and ruin the environment.
i do not have any friend's in any atv community's as i do not have a atv or will i ever.
- dave m, epping nh
Lets look at the facts. A woman died during a charity event. She was riding an ATV when this tragic event occurred. This should not be used as a soap box platform. I disagree with banning ATV's all together. I believe that like anything else proper training and safety eqipment should be used. For example: helmets, googles, gloves, chest protectors, riding boots, ect...
- Enlightend Rider, Everywhere
As someone who worked with the incredible woman who passed away in this accident, and as a dirtbike rider herself, I would like to say that she will be missed and that I would hope people would pay attention to what matters in this story, that an incredible woman is now gone and we should be praying for her family rather than bickering- regardless of who is right or wrong.
- Ashley, Portsmouth, NH
well everyone should have there opinion, my opinion is atv's are death machine's and should be banned
- dave m, epping nh
Dave your a complete jacka@$. Everything is dangerous. Driving, sports of any kind, mowing your lawn. That doesn't mean you should ban them because there dangerous. Its all about accident prevention and safety through safety courses and driving responsibly. I and many others absolutley love this sport and have been riding for quite some time and hope to continue to do so. My thoughts go out to the families of the lost.
- Pete, Wakefield
What happened yesterday at the CMN ATV event yesterday was a complete tragedy. My heart goes out to that family. However, everyone that was there yesterday including myself made the decision to ride and help out other people in need. No matter what you do in your life you put yourself at risk of injury and possilbly death. Walking to get exercise you could get hit by a car, while sleeping in your bed your house could catch on fire, playing football you could break a leg, etc. Banning an atv would solve an accident like what happened yesterday but this could also happen with a snowmobile or motorcycle. Would it be just to ban those as well?
- SM, Northwood, NH
It's so very sad that Dave M is an avid atver and would use this death as another stab at his NH ATV "friends". Since Dave M is now a Maine ATV rider, he will call upon all sorts of good people to start his fights.
I guess these deaths have brought out a lot of what's wrong with society. You got folk who lie and live for bad things that get to stay alive.
These women who died were giving of themselves at charity events which are much needed these days. Comments from Dave M should be discarded and the honor of these families upheld..
- ATV Rider, Lowell, Ma
Your right Dave M. While their at let's ban all cars and close all the roads...there is certainly more deaths attributed to motor vehicle accidents than ATV accidents.
- Sue, Manchester
Dave you need to get a clue, these are not death machines. They are no more dangerous than any other activity out there. When it is your time, it is your time period. Tree huggers like you are always trying to ruin anything that you don't agree with. Get back in line for your govt issued cool aide and wait for them to save us all.
- Larry, coden al
Sad that a life was lost but should a ban be placed on cars, motorcycles, cigarettes. Life has risks.
- RDS, Epping,NH
this is just another tragic loss, how many more people are gonna die before this state ban's atv's and closes all the trail's.
let's start saving lives and ban these death machine's
